 General Feature of Kalasin As one of Thailand’s northeastern provinces, Kalasin occupies an area of approximately 6,946,746 sq.km. or about 4,341.716 rai equivalent to 4.5 percent of the total area of the northeast. Boundary Located about 519 km away from Bangkok, Kalasin is surrounded by Sakon Nakhon and Udonthani with the Lam Pao River and the Lam Phanchat Stream serving as borderline in the north, Roi-Et and Mahasarakam in the south, Sakon Nakhon and Mukdahan with a stream from the Phu Phan mountain ranges serving as borderline in the east and Mahasarakam and Khon Kean with the Chi River serving as borderline in the west. Administration Kalasin comprises 14 districts (Amphur) and 4 sub-districts (King-Amphur), namely Amphur Muang, Amphur Yang Talad, Amphur Kamalasai, Amphur Sahatsakhan, Amphur Ku Chi Narai, Amphur Tha Khan To, Amphur Somdet, Amphur Khao Wong, Amphur Huay Mek, Amphur Kham Muong, Amphur Rong Kham, Amphur Nong Khung Sri, Amphur Na Mon, Amphur Huay Pung, King-Amphur Sam Chai, King-Amphur Na Ku, King-Amphur Don Chan and King-Amphur Kong Chai; and 135 Tambons, 1,556 villages (Moo Baan), one Muang municipality, 23 Tambon municipalities, one provincial administration authority and 126 Tambon administration authorities. Amphur Yang Talad (with 205 Moo Baan) has more villages than any other districts, while Amphur Rong Kham (with 40 Moo Baan) has the fewest villages. As for population, Amphur Muang Kalasin and Amphur Kamalasai (with 212 people/sq.km) have more people than any other districts. Climate Hot in the summer and rather cold in the winter. Topography Blessed with high mountains, plains, and wet basin, the topography of Kalasin is characterized into mountainous areas (the Phu Phan mountain ranges) covering Amphur Somdet, Amphur Khao Wong, Amphur Ku Chi Narai and Amphur Huay Pung which are located east and north of town; valley area covering Amphur Khao Wong, Amphur Tha Khan To, Amphur Sahatsakhan, northern part of Amphur Yang Talad, and southern part of Amphur Somdet and some parts of Amphur Huay Pung; wave like located in Amphur Tha Khan To, Amphur Sahatsakhan, northern part of Amphur Yang Talad, southern part of Amphur Somdet and some part of Amphur Huay Pung; plains area in Amphur Muang, Amphur Yang TAlad, southern part of Amphur Sahatsakhan, eastern part of Amphur Somdet and Amphur Huay Pung and basin plains area along the Chi River, the Lam Pao River and the Phan River in Amphur Kamalasai, Amphur Muang and Amphur Yang Talad. Social Factors Population: According to the 2004 surveys, Kalasin has 994,302 people (496,582 males and 497,720 females). Education: In 2004, Kalasin has 1,097 educational institutions with 10,661 teachers and 216,820 students. Religions: The majority of people are Buddhists. There are 810 Buddhist temples, one church and one mosque. Public Health: Each district has its own hospital and health service centers located in every Tambon. Economy In 2003, an average income of Kalasin inhabitants is 28,678 baht/person. 29.20 % (8,102 million baht) of total income earned from wholesale and retail business, 20.18 % (5,599 million baht) from agriculture, hunting and forest and 14.23% (3,948 million baht) from industrial sector. Economics crops include paddy, tapioca, sugarcane, peanut and so on. Kalasin has 386 industrial factories, 124 agricultural plants (90 paddy mills and 34 other agro-industrial mills).
